HERO OR VILLAIN: USING BLENDER
We will be constructing a character in a 3D program called Blender. It is completely free for you to use and download at home, so if you are able, I would like you to play with the program at home as well, so you can become more familiar with it. www.blender.org Be sure to get your parent/guardians' permission before doing so.
To introduce the topic, we will look at and discuss the following articles.

You will include one potential career related to 3D modeling in your artist statement.
Here's some samples from the web that will help inspire your hero or villain!
You will sketch out features of your hero/villain (10 minimum fully rendered) . When you submit your assignment to Canvas, I will ask you to turn in these sketches/concept maps to me as well. Simplify your forms down to basic geometric forms to help you better understand how you will construct your character. Think in terms of overall structure, and don't be tied to a humanistic form for your character! I want to see these sketches as part of your grade for this project. We need to plan ahead, so we know the direction we will take when we get started into Blender.

GETTING STARTED WITH BLENDER
Here's a basic map of the program. We will learn more as we work more with the interface. Keep in mind, traditionally, we have worked with 2D digital materials up to this point. We will be adding a third dimension, and they work in the language of x,y, and z. The x axis is indicated in red, y in green, and z in blue.

REquirements for your Hero/Villain
Your hero/villain will require a form. No invisible characters! It can be part animal, just as long as you defend your decision in your artist statement. Your character will also be required to have fabric on them in some shape or form. It can be in the form of clothing, cape, magic carpet, etc.
I also want to see original characters! The more unique, the better! The grading criteria is as follows:
You will submit your final render in jpg format, along with the artist statement to Canvas. Your sketches will be turned into the box on the cart as well (so don't throw those away!)
I also want to see original characters! The more unique, the better! The grading criteria is as follows:
- Structure: 10 pts-- I will look for well developed, complex structures. Don't be afraid to really define the details!
- Fabric/Clothing: 5 pts-- Make sure the fabric looks like it is natural, not rigid. Body Armor is the only exception!
- 3 Materials (texture/UV mapping) minimum: 5 pts-- Three separate materials minimum.
- Final Render: 10 pts-- Pay attention to your camera angle, final material aesthetic, lighting, and overall composition. I suggest including multiple views of your character, so your audience can get a better idea of what they are looking at. If you create duplicates of the same object in your scene, it becomes very easy to do this.
- Participation: 5 pts-- Are you using your class time wisely? Are you seeking help if you need it?
- Artist Statement: 10 pts-- 7-9 sentences defending your decisions of who you made and what is their skills as a hero/villain. This can be in the form of a story. 1-2 additional sentences about how this can apply to a career in the digital world. I will grade upon correct grammar, cohesiveness, punctuation, capitalization, etc.
- Creativity/Originality: 5 pts-- Is your idea original? I don't want recreated comic, movie, game characters.
